History of the library

Jan Czekanowski Library has been created along with Polish Ethnological Society in 1895 in Lvov, where it functioned with connection to the University of Jan Kazimierz. After the Second World War it has been relocated to Lublin, and then in 1952 – for short period of time - to Poznan, from where in 1953 it has been moved to Wroclaw, where its collection has been placed in buildings belonging to University of Wrocław.
From the beginning of its existence, Library collects domestic and foreign publications from ethnology, cultural anthropology and folklore as well as conducts exchange of publications with Polish and foreign institutions. Contacts with some of them originate from the turn of 19^th and 20^th centuries. Due to this cooperation within Library's collections are held valuable foreign books and many completed periodicals (e.g. "Anthropos”, "MAN”, "Český Lid”, "Schweizerisches Archiv”) as well as ethnographical publications published in small editions, rarely available on book market.
Whole of collection survived 114 years and thanks to constant purchases of new publications become unique in the whole Poland.
